I Was Leading a Class on Creative Journaling When Suddenly ...

I was recently asked by an executive of an account I work on to lead a class for seniors as part of the organization's lifelong learning program. I was flattered and said "yes" although as a copywriter I was not sure what I could teach. My contact suggested "creative journaling"and I agreed.

I don't keep a journal and barely remember to update this blog but after a little research I had my outline done, a two-page handout for the class, and some ideas for our…

Blog Posts: How Long is Long Enough?

I'm writing this today in response to a post in a LinkedIn group that brought up the issue of blog post length. There was an article cited about this and we were asked our opinion on the question of what is the right length for a blog. I suppose the issue of frequency is also at play here but as someone who barely writes on her own blog (my last entry was just over two months ago!) I am not going to go there today.

What's old is new again

In the analog days before marketing went into a digital frenzy, some of the toughest sales challenges was selling office copiers or long distance service (remember having to pay to call outside your area?). Back then, sales people made in-person cold calls and depended on the powers of persuasion to get past the gatekeeper.

Well, many of the guidelines that channeled sales people; they are now also called business developers or producers, still have merit. As a matter of fact,…

Many Seniors can benefit from a Reverse Mortgage.

To all JBN Members,

I would be delighted to have the opportunity to explain how Home Equity Conversion Mortgages have given homeowners, age 62 and over, on fixed incomes, great financial freedom. The ability for them to access extra cash can greatly help with any expenses, as well as medical care.

A HECM can positively affect the quality of a senior’s life by eliminating their mortgage payment, and giving them the option to take cash for any purpose. Ownership of…

How expensive is actually expensive?

Year ago, one of my mentors told me the following and I truly believe it is so...

“It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little.  When you pay too much, you lose a little money… that is all.  When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.  The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot.  It can’t be done.  If you deal with the lowest bidder, it…

Check yourself before you Wreck yourself...

Insurance agents and advisers have spent a lot of time worrying about the impact of the Federal Estate Tax. Largely ignored is the impact of state estate taxes. Are your assets protected?

As tax season begins it is time to check up on your financial status. Did you ever think of reviewing your insurance policies? Consumers don't always take into account that they are probably worth a lot more than last year. If you are worth more you should make sure that you are covered for that extra value.

Do you have young drivers or a child in college?

Did you know that if they are liable for damages that they cause, the victim will come after the parents?

Are you…

White Collar Exemptions: Do Employers Need to Pay Overtime Compensation to H-1B Workers? [Part I] By: Michael Phulwani, Esq., David Nachman, Esq. and Rabindra K. Singh, Esq.

The H-1B visa program allows U.S. employers to temporarily hire non-immigrants to fill specialized jobs in the United States. Specialized occupations are those occupations that require a “theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge, and …attainment of a bachelor’s or higher degree in a specific specialty (or its equivalent) as a minimum for entry into the occupation in the United States.” Employers who seek to hire an H-1B nonimmigrant in a specialty…

Israel Now Taxing US Trusts with Israeli Beneficiaires

If you have family living in Israel for whom you set up an irrevocable trust, Israel now wants its share. Until 2014, irrevocable trusts settled by foreign residents in favor of Israeli resident beneficiaries weren’t taxed by Israel unless the beneficiaries exercised “control or influence” over the trust. This is no longer the case.

Beginning January 1, 2014, Israel is taxing any trust anywhere in the world that has an Israeli resident beneficiary. For more information, click here: …
